"Burial is all about brutal death metal! From the first crushing blow to the
last grunt, Burial rip your head off & piss down your throat. The band is
relentless in its attack & cannot be fucked with. If you think I am
exaggerating, test the waters, in fact I encourage you! Buy this & be blown
away! "Pale Shades Of Humanity" sets it off with anger & adrenaline. Every
riff is perfectly timed to detonate & they don't waste time w/ melody. The
shoot straight & hit hard with every track. The vocals are some of the most
inhuman deep screams from hell I have ever heard. The songs are driving &
consistently groove ridden. Of course there is a healthy dose of blast beats
thrown in the mix to increase the insanity. These guys just put the death in
death metal! So if you think death metal is dead, check this out! They
resurrect the suffocation style of DM! With song titles like Skullfucked &
Disfigured in Flames, you know you are getting the real deal. To be honest
with you, I could not handle this shit on a daily basis. This is just so
fucking heavy it is hard to swallow. I'm getting to old for this! Seriously
though, this is some killer shit, go easy on it. This is my new soundtrack to
destruction!6 6 / 6 6 6" - Burning Season (USA)
"Pyrexia never delivered a respectable sequal to Sermon of Mockery, Which I
believe to be the most grimy, illogical and interred American death metal
release ever. And while Burial hasn't actually made Sermon Part 2, they've
come closer with Enlightened With Pain than Pyrexia ever did....you will be
pummeled more than once." - S. Craig Zahler, Metal Maniacs (USA)
"4.5/6
Brutal death metal, this is what Burial offers to us...that "Enlightened with
Pain" come after an average MCD released in 1997 (Mourning the Millennium)
but fortunately now their skills are increased than those years, making of
that a real worthy release. The whole album slavishly follows the traditional
death metal path but with mastery and intelligence, proof of this is the good
songwriting that make all the songs interesting enough to be listened without
lack of interest of the listener. the technical band skills are surely above
the average and expecially the drummer and the singer (a fucking beast!) have
a great performance. Nothing more to say, if you like american death metal
"Enlightened with Pain" is one of the best lately release." - Tragenda (Italy)
"Rich from LD has an ear for killer bands and signed a local here from my home
state MA, BURIAL! Since the demo cd the band released they've gone through a
couple line-up changes, and they are killer changes. Their debut cd
"Enlightened With Pain" is a great addition to other metal releases this year
so far. The new vocalist is fuckin sick as hell, as he churns out growls and
screams mixed with plenty of lung butter for that added guttural sound,
bahah! One thing I really liked about this new disc is that the guitarist
sound as if their dueling when the solo's kick in, and I can hear sight
Morbid Angel influences in the soloing. If you were lucky enough to have
heard the demo cd than you know this new one is ssssiiiiccckkkkk!!! GET IT!" - Bludgawd Extreme Metal Music Resource (USA)
"I remember getting this band's Mourning the Millennium demo and liking it (in
HELL FROST 7), though somehow I got a second copy and trashed it about a year
later (in the March 2000 issue). That kinda stuff happens when you get 400
things a week for review, but I was "enlightened" to find some first-rate
death metal on Burial's latest and this time, I definitely will not be
changing my opinion. Enlightened With Pain stands firmly alongside their US
underground death metal peers (Skinless, Fleshgrind, Dying Fetus, etc.) in
terms of the reckless, guttural pounding and sick-for-the-sake-of-being-sick
aesthetics, though the precision and time changes in the rhythm guitars shows
incredible control - the combination of "reckless" and "tight" really carves
a sense of individuality in Burial's otherwise traditional "brutal" sound.
"Human Menagerie" is the song to throw on first if you want to hear how
perfect some of their arrangements are; think whirlwind grind riffs
interlaced with ascending/descending scale-type parts, smashed under a
steamroller of low-end thuds with varying blast drumming that literally
doesn't sound out of place for a single beat. The way the drums are mixed is
extremely clean without being TOO clean; the "snap" of the snare is loud at
points and quiet at others, and the bash of the cymbals always seems to be
right on cue with the guitars (in any riff pattern). The drum sound also has
a cold, almost black metal precision to it (think Setherial) ... don't panic
if you dislike black metal, because (with exception of a few "ghost"-like
vocal growls) the comparison starts and ends there. The vocals are actually
the one thing I think could be done better. If super-guttural death metal is
your thing you'll disagree with me here, but I think between the
bile-gargling "puke" vocal and that "ghostly" thing I mentioned, the latter
is more intelligent and would better accent the precision in the music.
However, Burial have combined the Morbid Angel style vocal and the gore-grind
type in a way that will appeal to fans of either. After listening to this
disc 5 or 6 times I start to notice that it's actually a LOT more chaotic
(and even experimental in a way) than what you get on the first listen.
"Skullfucked" has a good mix of simple, ultra-heavy pounding and some twisted
grind parts that come out of nowhere, and pay attention at the end where this
psychotic melody(about 10 seconds long) busts out as the final lead of the
album. Enlightened With Pain is easily one of the best underground death
metal CD's of 2000, I greatly look forward to their future works. 98/100" - Hellfrost
"Brutal death metal in the vein of old Cannibal Corpse would describe this one
best. The vocals are guttural, very similar to the old Chris Barnes style.
Music teeters between choppy breaks and speedy guitar licks, but manages to
pummel throughout. The guys are from Massachusetts, an area that is known for
sprouting heavy, evil metalcore bands such as Converge, Cave In, Overcast and
the like...and more recently crossover metal bands such as Shadows Fall.
Unlike these bands, Burial does not leave you questioning what genre to pile
them in...they are death metal. I don't know what these guys were doing in
the late 80's, but if they weren't playing at that time, they were definitely
sitting around listening to a lot of the stuff that came out then.

"Rating: 4 of 6
These are two brand new CDs brought forth the light by US Lost Disciple
Records. Don't ask me why, but I decided to compose some kind of a combined
review this time. Ok, let's start with BURIAL. This is just a splendid piece
of US-styled death metal, unfortunately not that memorable. Versatile and
brutal as hell itself. As to ENTER SELF, it's heavily reminiscent of
'Domination' CD. Exactly, the one by MORBID ANGEL. 'Awaken In Agony' isn't
a copycat-sort of CD, though. Both are
brilliantly executed and well performed, therefore it strikes as most death
metal freaks definitely will get high on it. It's not the same with me,
however saying I didn't like 'Enlightened With Pain' or 'Awaken In Agony'
would be a severe lie." - (Herr Stalhammar) Vae Solis (Russia)
"Lost Disciple has landed a deal for one more excellent death metal combo,
that rises up like another phoenix with the ultimate quest for derangement
and descent. Common, you hear this name for the first time, right? At least
the major part of you. That is what surprises me a bit. Unlike that violence
that sprouts from the speakers whilst Burial is in charge, courtesy of thick
and massive production, slightly similar to label-mates Pessimist. Stop and
recollect the first record by these masters - I find some parallels between
both artists, and predict similar mounting for Burial as well. They have
actually started not so long time ago, yet their 1998's Mourning The
Millenium mcd is said to make a stir in States back then. If it was really
so, then this debut full-length just proves their ambitions and pushes guys
further in the depths of brutal deathmetal scene. Missing their previous
material, I dare say that Enlightened With Pain must be the best they have
come with so far. What truly impress is the technical level of playing, yet
the most important - their capability to keep music fresh and crushing
throughout the 36 minutes set. Generally, new American bands have seemingly
moved forward from the typical NY area deathmetal clowning that was so
pathetic some 4-5 years back. More and more newcomers simply rage, and
deliver top-notch brutality instead of boring fast/slow type of the style.
Peculiarities are not Burial's fad, as this band rather sticks to the canons
of the genre, but they compose brutal music with a positive energetic
enthusiasm, and execute this genre without mistakes. Simple as that. At times
you might catch Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation hint (and these bands are yet
above them), but I am sure that with time Lost Disciple artists will get to a
stage finding their own smart tips, that it were possible to compete with the
genre's finest bands. Highly recommended album!- 11 pts" - Ad Arma
"Burial Enlightened With Pain -
Here is a band that those in a more Death metal circle will know about? They
came on as Legion and had a demo in 1996. A you will hear as you dig into the
first track "Pale Shade Of Humanity". That hell has been brought to you from
Massachusetts. Getting right to things. The production is sure in pounding
death form. Those that love the Broken Hope and Cannibal Corpse will devour
this. Every pin intended. This dude Devin has really mastered this grinding
death style to the max! "Disfigured In Flames" drives along and zone in on
how guttural those vocals get. Christ oh mighty! This is hellspawned music.
They also go that famous route of using some samples of movies verbal content
as on a weird pounding track "The Bitter Taste Of Defeat". Some violent
sounds on that one. They mash, they pound they grate they also ad some
ambiance to this assault on the system.. Come hear the horror of a track that
is pretty damned wicked grind of "Entropy". Some sick music here people. How
about a track like "Skullfucked" to bring this very vile piece of metal to
an end." - Hammerhead
"From the opening 16th, it became immediately apparent that this listener was
in for a violent, furious ride. Massachusetts' own Burial recalls a time
when brutal Death Metal was the 'be all end all of extremes! It brings to
light the fond memories of heading to North Jersey to catch the latest batch
of young, brutal upstarts at Studio One. The cool thing about most Death
Metal is that it is somewhat timeless Death Metal just IS! Enlightened
With Pain is both a tribute to the viciousness that has already gone and a
testimony that the nightmare will continue! Ten tracks of total destruction
and bombastic mayhem is all you will get from this debut release; Burial
seems to be heavily influenced by masters SUFFOCATION and MONSTROSITY, which
could hinder the band's own identity because the parallels are many? ah,
screw it! This is the kind of Death Metal that will shove a chainsaw up your
ass and turn that son-of-a-bitch on!! That's some fuckin' rippin' ass shit!!
Burial is Death Metal designed to butcher all non-believers! 'Nuff said!" - Battle Helm
"With guest vocal appearances by Sherwood Weber (Skinless) and Rich Lipscomb
(Fleshgrind) you know that Enlightened With Pain is going to be one
over-the-top slab of brutality. What really helps Burial stand out from the
hordes of "growl and grind" Death Metal outfits currently crowding the
scene, however, is some very tasty high-speed guitar riffing, catchy musical
compositions and unique and memorable breaks. Fans of ultra-brutal Death
Metal played with style and distinction should be prepared to be Enlightened
With Pain. 8 1/2 Skulls" - SOD MAG
"Uh-oh, I like the colors on their cover--not a good sign.
Apprehensively I slide the disc into the slot and hold my breath as it clicks
into spin and lets loose its demons. Whew, it's all right, it's brutal and
blasting. Enlightened with Pain is one of my favorite releases this year.
This is rocking, ferocious, torture-all-prisoners, true brutal death metal.
The rhythms are occasionally off-kilter just enough to snap you back to
attention. Not that your attention would wander often with this blitzkrieg of
blazing death metal unleashing its musical brutality for your hellish
pleasure. If you don't give them your undivided attention, they will come to
your house and hurt you and your loved ones repeatedly until you beg them to
stay. Musically I hear a little of Immortal during their more guitar-oriented
material, a tad of Dying Fetus and just a dash of Deeds of Flesh. This is
old-fashioned brutal death metal--it wants to earn your pain for their
twisted pleasure.
Don't doubt for a second the hate and vitriol inherent in Enlightened with
Pain. Hate oozes from the deep, brutal cuts infested with death, demons and
gore. It's best just to purchase their disc immediately and allow your entire
essence to get Enlightened with Pain. Your burial awaits." - Sabrina Haines, Ear Pollution (USA)
"Brutal Fucking Death Metal from USA, perhaps
at the beginnig you'll compare their sound with the one of bands like
Suffocation or Cannibal Corpse (with Chris Barnes), if you're looking for
Brutal Death metal, then go and pick up this disc inmedialtly. If you wonder
what you can find in "Enlightened With Pain" then all what you need to start
to answer yourself is to take a look to the disc's cover, where Death is
showed, violence and total bloodlust, the sound of the guitars are ultra
sick, be careful because this could be catastrophic for you, the drums will
hit directly your face, and Devin's vocals are cannibal. Burial presented a
mcd in 1998 and now they are back again bringing more power. Rich
(Fleshgrind) and Sherwood (Skinless) participated in this disc too, the
production contains 10 songs of Brutal Death metal, and in this way is how
the songs are entitled : Pale Shade of Humanity, Disfigured in Flames,
Repugnance, The Bitter Taste of Defeat, Human Menagerie, Scorn and
Castigation, The Awakening, entropy, Enlightened With Pain and
Skullfucked...the sound of Enlightened With Pain will sure bury your brain..."
- Prelude in Darkness webzine (peru)
"At first looks
the pretty crap cover put me off listening to Burial. Still, after listening
to everything else I had I decided to give it a whirl and was pleasantly
surprised with what I found. Unlike the Burial (RIP) who cursed the UK scene
with their morose doom, Burial (US) are firmly of the old school death metal
n' blast beats style. Repugnance, Skullfucked and Enlightened With Pain are
just solid walls of death metal that any fan of Cannibal Corpse and every
other US death metal band should enjoy. It won't make any sense to anyone
else but to death metal fans this will be another surefire winner in your
collection. [7/10]" - GRAHAM FINNEY - Intoxicated zine(UK)
"Complex and brutal Death Metal with a nice amount of killer riffs for once,
and it gets better and better for each listen! How many extreme Metal albums
can you say that about in these times?" - Apostasia
"This new disc is just sick. Burial don't play games with mosh parts,
breakdowns, none of that stuff. It's just straight-up old-school death metal,
in the vein of the first couple (and considered by many to be the best)
Cannibal Corpse albums. They're not afraid to speed things up or slow things
down, but they don't run you around in circles with repetitive riffs just to
be heavy, and they're not afraid to rip into the occasional guitar solo or
double-bass marathon. The vocals are definitely the best part. Totally deep
and guttural, and very reminiscent of Tomb of the Mutilated-era Cannibal
Corpse, which is an obvious favorite among death metal fans worldwide.
There's no reason to skip Burial if heavy and brutal death metal is even
close to your thing. Skip the bullshit and bring the metal. This disc will
definitely be the one I recommend to anyone who dares to consider themselves
metal. It's good to know there are greener pastures when some death metal
bands are just out of breath these days." - Loudnet
"Shattering death metal attack from start to inish by burial in one of the
most extreme debut releases I've had the chance to listen lately. Fast, blunt
and lethal like every great death metal band. It’s a pleasure to feel the
fierce drumming diplayed on the first track "Pale shade Humanity". A brutal
blow that keeps on pounding for 35 minutes which is the llength of Don
Marhefka , along with the technique , and musical power of the other members
of Burail, make this cd a true death metal feast, and yet another one
released by Lost Disciple Records. They have started to turn this into a
Habit ever since already legendary debut release by Pessimist. Production and
sound are perfect 9.0/10" - Himnos Rituales (Columbia)
"Finally we have the new Burial album, which's a natural sequel to the debut
CD, "Mourning the Millenium". Again, we have here a very brutal Death metal
with no freshness. There aren't even introductions, Pale Shade Of Humanity
strikes everything in its way. Cannibal Corpses appears to our mind right in
this first track. Aside the Death Metal outfit , the drums are practically
grindcore, as well as vocals thrown up by Devin Doherty (he reminds Chris
Barnes). Lecrenski and Matt Rogalski guitar lines make the music never
sounding repetitive, because they show amazing riffs and technical solos. For
those who enjoy the American Death Metal way, "Enlightened with Pain" is
perfect. Human Menagerie is a highlight, that is not inferior to the best
moments in Suffocation . Elite Death metal!
Rating: 9,0" - Alexander Kurtz, Renegade Rock (Brazil)
"Burial's first EP Mourning the Millenium was good but nothing special, and it
showed some room for impovement. At times it was too technical, other times
it got bland and boring, but on Burial's first full length they seem to have
gotten to be better song writers in the time between this and Mourning the
Millenium. Enlightened With Pain is just violent and brutal from start to
finish, and I love it more and more each time I listen to it. Sherwood of
Skinless, and Rich Lipscomb of Fleshgrind did guest vocals on several songs,
in my opinion two of the best vocalists in death metal, making for one of the
sickest combination of growls that I have heard in a really long time.
Musically, Burial can go from really fast riffs and blasts to an almost
NYDM-Style groove as the bass keeps chugging along, and the leads during the
odd parts to the songs actually add quite a bit to it, rather then look like
showing off as many leads riffs end up doing. Not the fastest, not the
heaviest..but just a damn good release from a solid band who will only
improve over time. I reccomend picking this up if you like Fleshgrind,
Skinless, Dehumanized, or mostly brutal death. Rating: 8/10" - Unchain the Underground
"Once again Lost Disciple brings forth another band of the purest Death
variety. I haven¼t heard such guttural belchings since CC¼s Tomb of the
mutilated¾. Musically the band has a darker feel to it than cannibal Corpse
as opposed to so much technicality, so the comparisons will not happen. I
would perhaps prefer a vocalist that can be understood a bit more, but it
doesn¼t take anything away from this. One of the most intense PURE Death
metal albums in a long time. Rating 93/100" - Ultima Comparatio
"
To state the bio Burial the name says it all as to what this band is all
about. Can you guess what this band is all about? It is of course about
brutal Death Metal becoming better and better the more you listen to it.
These guys have been playing together since 1996 and the music presented on
this CD shows that they have spent time on writing songs and making them
better and better and even a little better at the end. These are no songs
made one week before the recording session unless they are some ultra
musical geniuses. I wouldn't be surprise if that were the case. This is
brutal and technical Death Metal and not some attempt of making the Death
Metal genre sound like pop. Pure brutality lasting for 35 minutes, 35
minutes well worth listening to."
"If I say American death-metal scene, you know to Morbid
Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Angel Corpse (RIP) or Hate Eternal,
you're right but there are terribly underground famous bands such Cephalic
Carnage and tons of others, Burial ? Yes, with this new release, they are
back and what a release. Personally, I didn't know their first mini CD
entitled "Mourning The Millenium" but this first full-length album is really
great. True American death-metal, this rules ! Influenced by Cannibal Corpse,
Suffocation or Internal Bleeding, Burial from Westfield adds to its music
more technical and heavier touches. The result : 10 tracks of brutal
death-metal, true American death-metal. The underground is always here, it
calls Burial ! (9/10)"
